Filter press is a mechanical equipment that uses filter media to perform solid-liquid separation under pressure. Since its application in chemical production in the early 18th century, it has been widely used in many industries such as chemical, pharmaceutical, metallurgical, food, and environmental protection.Working principle and main typesThe basic principle of a filter press is to apply pressure to a suspension, forcing the liquid (filtrate) to pass through a porous filter medium (usually a filter cloth), while solid particles are trapped to form a filter cake, thereby achieving solid-liquid separation. According to the different structures and operating modes of the filter chamber, it can be mainly divided into the following categories:1.Plate and frame filter press: The filter chamber is composed of alternating flat filter plates and filter frames with hollow chambers, with filter cloth sandwiched between the plate and frame. This is an earlier form of filter press with a simple structure, but replacing the filter cloth is relatively inconvenient. ‌‌

2.Diaphragm filter press: An elastic rubber diaphragm is embedded in the box or plate frame filter plate. After the filtration is completed, high-pressure water or compressed air is injected into the back chamber of the diaphragm. The expansion of the diaphragm causes secondary compression of the filter cake, which can further reduce the moisture content of the filter cake. ‌‌
Vertical filter press: The filter plates are horizontally stacked and a continuous circulating filter belt is used to run through all filter chambers. Its working process (filtration, extrusion, washing, drying, unloading) has a high degree of automation and is suitable for scenarios that require continuous and large-scale production, such as metallurgy and large-scale chemical projects. ‌‌
3.Belt filter press: Using two annular filter belts to hold sludge, it passes through gravity dewatering, wedge-shaped preloading, low-pressure and high-pressure pressing areas to achieve continuous dewatering. It has a large processing capacity and is commonly used for sludge dewatering in industries such as municipal sewage treatment, papermaking, and coal washing. ‌‌
